Arizona trip….Edition One

blogaz 001

On Sunday of last week, we flew into Phoenix,Az.  Picked up a rental car at the airport. The salesperson suggested that we go with an SUV due to the area we were heading too.  Boy……she was 100% correct! We left Phoenix and drove North, out of the valley. Stopped in Flagstaff for dinner then continued on to Kayenta,Az.  I need to mention that as we were having dinner, at the Cracker Barrel in Flagstaff, the State closed Interstate 40 East of us.  Seems that there was a sandstorm blowing strongly and cutting visibility to zero.

In our inexperience, we merrily continued North only to run smack dab into the same storm?? Nearly being blown off the road a couple of times and having great difficulty in seeing….we finally made it to our destination.  In the morning there was still some wind but not as much.  We forged ahead thru the Four Corners area. This is where Utah,Colorado,Arizona an New Mexico meet. Actually we were going to Telluride, Colorado as we had heard good things about the area.  As we traveled to our destination, we stopped at Mesa Verdi National Park to see the cliff dwellings of the “Ancients” as the Navajo Nation calls them.

Absolutely fantastic park with spectacular views and so much history!  Truely worth the stop.  Continued on our way over to Durango then North again over the San Jaun Mountains…..sometimes reaching elevations of over 11,000 feet.  Where I come from, we are at sea level so the air was rather thin!  The drive, thru the mountains was terrific.  So much beauty around every turn.

This is the long way to Telluride but was more than worth the time….Telluride was a mining town from the late 1800’s and of late has become one of the premier ski resorts.  It is set in a valley surrounded by huge mountains on three sides. The town is a step back into the early 1900’s as most of the architecture is of Federal Design Period.

Heading out to Arizona

On Sunday, my wife and I will be flying out to Phoenix.  We plan to spent the week visiting the area north of the valley.  I’m sure I’ll have pictures and stories to share?  The shop will be open as usual.  If you need me personally though, please call my cell phone number.  I’ll have the laptop as well and will check emails daily.  Looking forward to a little down time.  See you soon. Paul

Interesting day…..

We made the delivery of the completed Gulf Visible gas pump today.  It went to a friend’s farm north of Baltimore.  Very pretty country out that way.  Hollywood has filmed several movies in this area.  Most recently, My One And Only, with Rene Zellweger.  Before that they shot certain scenes  with Julia Roberts and Richard Gere in the  movie,  The Runaway Bride.  Anyway, we got to the farm and made our delivery.  Went around to the stable to say hello and was greeted by several nice ladies.  They had been nursing a mare through the night into delivery.  She gave birth around three A.M. to a little foal.  The baby was a bit premature and weak but expected to do fine with much care.  It was a nice experience for us to see such a wonderful new life beginning.  Here is a picture.  Hope you like it?  Paul

Just Completed!

OK……Here are a few pictures showing what we do here at Severn Gas Pumps.  I put the finishing touches on this Bennett 810 gravity feed pump and it is ready to be delivered.  The restorations that we do keep the history of the “American Working Man” alive….. Without “US” there would be no economy for the government to mess with…..Hope you enjoy the photos? Paul

Most recent project

Had a friend call a couple of weeks ago. He was looking for a gravity feed gas pump, also called a visible, as you could see the gasoline in the glass cylinder on top. His family has been in the gas/oil business for several generations and he decided to add to his collection. I am taking pictures as we work and will post them here soon.

Interest in Old Stuff

I’ve noticed a lot of interest in antiques of late.  Apparently people are looking to put their money into tangeable items instead on the bank/market? It is nice to have new clients to discuss what we do.  Always a pleasure to watch their excitement as they see something that before, to them, was just old stuff.  Now the items have taken on a whole new role!

Helping Hand

The Cancer Society is having a challenge at the Old Mill High School on May 21. If at all possible, please donate to the cause? Thank you.

Richmond NASCAR

Had the opportunity of going to the NASCAR Races at Richmond, Va. last Saturday night.  Both of my sons decided that it would be a good guy’s night out. I must say that it was! I had never been to this type of race before…..I’m an old 1/4 miler so this was different.  Very good race with a nice pre-race buildup.  If you have a chance, give it a try……I don’t think you’ll be sorry.
